We’ve almost made it! It’s the penultimate prompt in the Garden
~
Penultimate Visit
If I had known tomorrow
You would be gone
I might have sat beside
Your bed a little longer
Told you all the things I
Love about you
Remembered stories from
Our childhood – the times
We giggled until our bellies
Hurt – the times we cried over
Lost pets
I would have asked you all the
Questions I had saved for
Another time
If I had known this day would
Spill over into your last
I would not have hurried home
To read a book and drink a cup
Of tea
So much to regret, those unanswered questions, especially..but never regret the friendship that brought you there on the day before.

Oh this is sad and nails the prompt right on the head…that ‘if only’ we are left with that can never be grasped. Wonderful writing.

The things we would do, say (or not), if we only knew what was coming next… *sigh*

… to open our hearts, to take even a few moments to tell what’s on our hearts – to do so in an unsappy way – that would be a gift. Sweet, poignant poem.

Thanks Candy – the penultimate is what judges us most relentlessly. We should ever act as if this were the last.
