Over in the imaginary gaden they’re talking about the classic elements
a clear winter night
millions of stars sparkled
against the black sky
gentle snowflakes float to earth
land on noble fir
where mouse and rabbit huddle
from the distant town
sounds of voices joined in song
float across the fields
notes of joy, peace, hopefulness
echo through the air
the stars shine brighter and
the tree stands prouder
mouse and rabbit sleep soundly
undisturbed this silent night

he couldn’t sleep
even though he
had been up all night –
it was his turn for
the night shift –
instead he stood
outside peering through
windows to watch
the smiles of excited
children opening gifts
his heart glowed when
he heard squeals of
joy as boys and girls
played with the toys they
most wished for but it was
time to go home
have some cookies
warm milk and put
his feet up – so with a soft
“ho, ho, ho”, he disappeared
into to the morning mist
Everyone else at the tree lot is searching for the “perfect” Christmas tree. A man holds a seven foot tree upright so his wife can pass judgement on its shape. A family debates whether or not the tree they like best will actually fit in their living room.
But I’m on a search for the tree no one else wants. A task that has become more difficult since Christmas trees are now raised on “farms” and only the trees with that classic cone shape make it to market.
At the end of a long row sits a smallish tree, trunk a little crooked, and branches that don’t conform to popular tastes – just the one I was looking for.
At home I put my little tree into the holder and make it as straight as possible. Then I find the worn cardboard box hidden behind the well organized plastic bins of ornaments. Inside are the tattered homemade decorations from my childhood. I string lights and paper chains on the tree and lovingly place each reindeer, snowman, and Santa. With only the tree lights glowing, I close my eyes and take a step back in time

my peace is not your peace
for my struggle is not yours
what vexes me you dismiss
with ease and your anxieties
bring me no anguish
your prayers are not my prayers
our snares are not the same
but our needs are not so different
a safe home
food and clean water
a feeling of usefulness
respect
surely then, peace will find us

I choose one paper angel from the giving tree. On the back is a sticker with the name of a child who needed presents for Christmas – Logan, 4 years old. I glanced at the list of items Logan needed or wanted, sweatshirt, sweatpants, shoes, bathtub toys, and a boat.
I set out to shop thinking it would be easy to find everything on that short wish list. I was right, except for one thing, the boat. I went from store to store hoping to find a boat for a four year-old boy. No luck! But I will continue the search. A child deserves to have his Christmas wish granted.

seekers of light
we turn our backs to
the darkness
pretend it doesn’t exist
admire the shiny lights
the baubles that twinkle
call loudly to us ” look at me”
and we can not hear the
whispers of nightly struggles
bright star lures us closer
warms our cold hearts until
we turn to embrace those who
live in the shadows
sleeping dove
balances without effort
on slender branch
It’s like the little black
dress of my culinary world
always appropriate –
breakfast, lunch, dinner,
even a midnight raid
pairs with anything –
fruit, wine, tea,
especially hot milk
easy to accessorize
sprinkles, donuts, bacon,
of course sea salt
perpetually in style –
holidays,vacations,
or just hanging at home
reading a good mystery
alone
