At Midnight

surreptitiously , deliciously
I wait until the lights are off
till every one is snuffling
in their beds
and then I wait little longer
just to be sure
cautiously, conscientiously
I creep toward the
hiding place
the place where no one
would think to look
deliberately, discreetly
I reach behind the
sauerkraut jar to find
my secret
chocolate stash

First Date

the band played Moonlight Serenade
and they danced cheek to cheek
across the floor
they were young and in love
once more
the rhythm of the music
swept them back to
a first date when she was
shy and he a nervous
young soldier

elegance

the elegance
of old age hides
beneath wrinkles-
is shrouded in a white
sweater with tissues
in the sleeves –
stumbles in orthopedic
shoes
the elegance
of old age shines
through eyes that
have seen the best
and worst yet still
find joy in children
and flowers
wonder in the clouds
hope in humankind

Inky Stars

vast spent stars of darkest ink
I think
are hiding in the deep of night
they might
have given up their glow
just flow
above us here below
keeping wishes we have made
upon them till they’d fade
I think they might just flow

M(Ohm)tivation

roll out of bed when the alarm
sounds – well, hit the snooze
once

wash face, brush teeth
maybe comb hair –
unless I hit the snooze
twice

pull on comfy clothes
grab my mat and keys
clean my glasses –
unless I hit the snooze
three times

downward dog
warrior I & II
tree pose – mine is
blowing in the wind
triangle

sun salutations
shavasana –
ahhhhhhh

my motivation
very large chia tea latte
after class

night sacrifice

I gaze up at night
to see the moon gazing
back at me
its muted light barely
cuts the darkness
it does not get the acclaim
the daytime sun garners
we do not lay under its
glow – soaking up rays
instead we sleep while
it keeps guard

it is unique in the sky

does it get lonely
I gaze up at night
and ask the man I see
if it is worth the sacrifice
