Secret Messages

Secret Messages

 

 

She emptied her heart.

Wrote all her secrets on little

slips of paper and put them in

old glass bottles she found

buried in her garden.

She carried them, in a cardboard box,

to the sea where she set them free –

a flotilla of her deepest thoughts, her

fears, her longings. All the things she

could no longer hold. She waved goodbye

as they bobbed away with the tide and

made a wish that whoever finds them

will know what to do with them.

Spring Again

Next week it will be Spring
again
the crocus and daffodils that waited beside the
tulips
for the slanting sun rays to warm the earth
will bloom
and dull winter birds will put on their best feathers
looking
for mates and building nests, never doubting miracles
like hope

Passing a Window Late One Night
–

Our eyes met through the window pane
A chance that may not come again
For just one second we were one
A feeling I can not explain

Then, just as quickly, she was gone
A graceful, caramel colored fawn
I look for her on clear, dark nights
To pass, once more, across my lawn

And wonder if she looks for me
When eating apples from my tree
I won’t forget that look we shared
One night that ended magically

Lillian is our gracious host in the pub tonight

She built a shed
To shield her heart
Filled with her own
Soft words and art

It was a shell
In which to hide
From bitter winds
And foaming tides

Built to protect
A wounded soul
Keep others out
Stay in control

Until she heard
One plaintive note
So she peeked out
And saw a boat

A boat that floundered
In the waves
It needed help
It needed saved

Again that plaintive
Note rang out
It rang for her
There was no doubt

She opened wide
The she-shell door
To show the boat
Where it could moor

She let that note
Into her soul
It turned to love
It made her whole

The Snowman

She built a snowman
On the first day of Spring
Festooned it with a garland

Of frozen daffodils
A line of limp crocus
Buttons marched

Down its rounded belly
A wreath of apple buds
Circled its snowy head

We got about 8” of wet snow – schools were cancelled, the art museum closed – perfect conditions for snowman building.

Another Cloudy Day in Western PA

I have learned to love the clouds
Light gray, dark gray
Wispy, ominous
Sometimes a wooly
Blanket covering the sky
I love them when they line up,
Like children waiting for
Recess, pushing and shoving
One another
One day they might rush by in a hurry to
Get to the next town or else they’ll
Just hang around for a while
Waiting for the wind to
Push them along
To soak up secrets from
Another admirer in a far off land
There is beauty in their forms
And shapes, their subtle shading,
The way they blush pink in the
Evening because they’ve hidden the
Sun all day
I have learned to love the clouds
Look up as they pass
And wish them well

I get a funny feeling deep
In my tummy – or is it
My heart – not quite sick
More forlorn, whenever I

On an online form
It’s kind of like the feeling I
Get whenever I think about
Fun we had and how we laughed
Until tears ran down
Our cheeks – then someone
Snorted and we laughed
Even harder and how
I wish there had been a box
For me to check
On your heart that said
‘remember me’

would like to recognize
the lined paper and pink-ink pen
that made my appearance possible
without their support I would
be just random thoughts escaping
into the atmosphere
they pushed and prodded my
words into being
arranged them and rearranged
them until they were ready
to shine a light in the darkness
to offer hope to the hopeless
to make a wish for peace for

Praying for Rain

I pray for rain – a fervent
supplication for
heavy, driving rain to wash
away my tears
I pray for clouds to reign
in the sky – blotting out
all traces of the sparkling sun
a grayness covering the memory
of your smile
I pray for thunder that rumbles
rattling windows and shaking
my soul until it becomes numb
and I can trudge onward
I pray for winds to whip and toss
my sorrow into tatters – small
pieces that can be endured
one at a time
I pray for the calm that follows
a storm where my grief can
learn to live

Why do we always wait for an event
to get together
to give a call
to send a card

 

We used to know everything
about each other
crushes
favorite ice cream
music
shoe size
fears

You’ve moved again
I don’t even know your address

It’s not your fault
or mine
life has us spinning off
in different directions

If we’re patient maybe
someday
it will spin us back together
