Everyday Relationships

I wake from troubled dreams
shuffle wearily to the kitchen
my hair sticks up in some
outer-space hairdo, my favorite
pjs have holes at the elbows
I grunt a morning greeting
and you are there – smiling
with coffee ready and news
of the latest visitors to the
backyard bird feeder

i dreamed i floated down a stream
left time behind to wait for me

and while i slept my friend, alone
stood patiently to light my way

back from the darkness of midnight
the slivered moon hung silently

afraid to shine and break the spell
i left all that i knew to fate

until the tide of dawn returned
me safely to my vacant bed

Farewell to Whimsy

it’s magic
when you’re only three
leaves change from green to
red and yellow flames
and caterpillars fall asleep
to awaken as butterflies
tiny black tadpoles swish
their tails through pond water
and slowly transform
into croaking frogs
until the school bell rings for you
the curtain is pulled down
and the wizard is exposed
whimsy dies and science takes its place

when you’re three
magic fills the air
changing leaves
butterflies
then science beckons to you
whimsy dies to facts

End of Our World

Let’s hold hands and sip red wine

while we wait for the dinosaurs

to trample us

We hear the roar of T-Rex and

the ground rumbles as Brontosaurus

ambles across fields of sweet corn

flattening barns and houses

Pterodactyls swoop down to

snatch grazing cows in their long

toothed beaks

There will be no happy ending

Let’s hold hands and sip red wine

until the children are in dreamland

and peace reigns in our world again

Priests preparing for
Wakakusa Yamyaku

no rhyme or reason

there is no man in the moon
no green cheese
no high jumping cow
no one to talk to in the middle of the night
no one watching over me as i sleep
the twinkling stars lied
they’re wearing cubic zirconium
the mouse has a digital watch
contrary mary is growing weed
and there are no shells by the sea
the sheep are on strike,
no new woolen mittens for this kitten
all rhyme and reason has been
stollen by wee willie
and i am left sitting with the king –
no pipe, no bowl, no music

Remembering

Omaha beach, Normandy
Omaha beach, Normandy

I stand
alone

on the beach and
imagine the young men
soldiers in their olive green
uniforms, wearing round,

bowl-like helmets – arms
raised, clutching rifles
pushing through the white-capped

surf onto the wet sandy ground
footsteps leaving pock
marks soon filled with
the tide and their blood

We recently visited Omaha beach in Normandy so this prompt brought to mind the movie “The Longest Day”
