you made me cry when
I didn’t finish my lunch
I was shy and only eight
I was afraid to speak up
even though I knew the answer
I yearned for recess and smiled
only at the end of the day
did you know?
why are you the teacher
I remember?

“you made me cry”, quite traumatic for a second grade child…probably that’s why she’s still remembered…

We remember the highs and lows of childhood. I remember at the same age when my teacher told me I was “stupid” because I didn’t understand math tho I was reading at 10th grade level. Amazing that any of us grow up to be productive individuals.

that’s for sure!

Oh that is sad. Kindness goes such a long way to drawing out a shy child. That teacher missed the opportunity.

Well captured. Sure the child in us would rather just remember the positive. But teaching is not always sweet enough.

Thanks. I’m sure being a teacher is traumatic too 😉
