Dear” Poems – Imaginary Garden with Real Toads
~~
Dear Art Instructor,
I don’t have a clue
Can you tell
I smudge and smudge
The squiggles of charcoal
I’ve drawn
Until, on my paper, is just
An amorphous blob of gray
Not a flower
And you smile, erase
Sketch and suddenly
My smudge becomes
A lovely blossom
Can you tell
I don’t have a clue

A Silent Friend
the fog knows
small secrets we keep
what we hide
from the light
like a good friend who won’t tell
what has been whispered
Trying to Save an Hour
I have locked the door
And placed a bowl of lemons there
All the curtains are closed –
Blinds pulled down
I’m burning sage and have
Gathered lucky stones
I rummaged through the junk
Drawer until I found a scraggly
Rabbit’s foot and a pressed
Four-leaf clover
My fingers are crossed
Horseshoes are hung
And stars have been wished upon
There is nothing left for me to do
I’ve done all I can
To safeguard my precious hour
And yet, I know, deep inside,
In the blink of an eye – while I sleep-
It will be gone
And I will pine

My good friend whines about Daylight Savings Time every year – this is for her.

Write an Annoyance poem
–
All Hail the Queen
It annoys me –
Just a little –
That my gripes are
Never as gripey as yours
My woes, not as
Woeful
My worries can’t compare
My annoyances not
Annoying enough
You win
You are the queen of whining
You get to wear the crown
Which you, no doubt,
Will complain about

Moon Burn
I love the gentleness of the moon
Softly glowing without intensity
We can gaze at each other
Without protection
No need for moon glasses
Or moon screen
Moonbeams drift
Harmlessly down to kiss my
Up-turned face and there
Is no danger of getting burned

A Conversation With My Aged Pussy Willow
Hang in there old friend
You’ve been my herald of spring
For four decades making me
Smile when your fuzzy little
Catkins appear – a sign that
Winter will soon be gone
Hang in there old friend
I’ll do my part to keep you
Healthy, pruned, pest free
I’ll spread compost around your
Trunk to keep you fed and when
Summer droughts arrive I will
Quench your thirst
You were my first shrub, planted
With loving hands in the
Corner of our yard
Together we have watched the
seasons change
Hang in there old friend
Looking For Love in the Home Depot
You tear things down
Remove the historical details
In favor of the smooth
The modern –
Roaming the aisles of
2x4s and plasterboard
And I, I long for color
And pattern and antiques-
Roaming the aisles of
Paint and knobs and
Curtains
Together we build a life
Composed of our differences
A home, a depot
Of collected memories

‘Another ___________’
—

Another Cloudy Day in Western PA
I have learned to love the clouds
Light gray, dark gray
Wispy, ominous
Sometimes a wooly
Blanket covering the sky
I love them when they line up,
Like children waiting for
Recess, pushing and shoving
One another
One day they might rush by in a hurry to
Get to the next town or else they’ll
Just hang around for a while
Waiting for the wind to
Push them along
To soak up secrets from
Another admirer in a far off land
There is beauty in their forms
And shapes, their subtle shading,
The way they blush pink in the
Evening because they’ve hidden the
Sun all day
I have learned to love the clouds
Look up as they pass
And wish them well
