they are on the blacklist
not invited to this party
where gaudy zinnias
and lavish glads
show off their best bloom(er)s
sunflowers with their toothy
grins stand proudly in
the back row
black eyed susans wait
patiently in a ring
hoping to be chosen
refreshing water is poured
from a tin vessel
but the ground ivy
is flatly refused entrance
for it is not on the
list written on soggy paper
by the muddy garden master

Gardener’s Lament

I sit behind a glass
a window pane
looking out at
my barren garden
longing for sun and warmth
longing to dig in the earth
longing for green shoots
pushing always upwards
longing for blossoms
longing even to do battle
with varmints and bugs
longing for the robust
harvest that follows
a gardeners toil

the gardener haibun

She loved her garden in spring the best. It’s true that in each season there is beauty but nothing compares to the hopefulness of tiny green shoots emerging from months spent biding their time underground. Everyday she could see how much they grew as they were nurtured by the gentle spring sun. Soft rain quenched their thirst. Each shoot knew it was destined for greatness under the watchful eye of the gardener.
