seeking silence

in solitude I searched
for silence
– when the sun slid

above the horizon,
but heard instead the
happy chirping

of morning birds
– in the afternoon stillness
the sound of buzzing

filled the air as bees
went about their busy-ness
– as the sun gave up the day

and the dusk of evening
enveloped me,
but the breeze whispered

in the trees, rustling the leaves
– even under the gentle moon a
chorus of crickets were singing

In solitude I searched
for silence
and found peace instead

coffee

a big coffee pot always
perking on the back burner
pumping out the acidy
odor of fresh coffee
coffee poured into a
thermos – ready for the
night shift
always coffee on the
table at a restaurant
always coffee
the aroma of my childhood
I never liked coffee but
I miss my dad

unbucket list

I will not make a buck-
et list
all things I’d like to do
someday

then tick them off
one by one
until my bucket’s
empty and I am left

instead I will drop some-
thing into my bucket
each day
a kind deed, an adventure

with a four year-old,
a trip, a concert, an un-
expected email,
lunch with a friend

oh, I’m sure there will be big
surprises in my bucket too
and when I reach the end
of this life

I will spill out all the
wonders my bucket
holds, smiling in
gratitude for my full bucket

dachshund

what breed of dog do I think I would be
if everything changed and I were not me

a shepherd, a collie, of maybe a pug
I hope not ’cause they look like they just ate a bug

maybe a labrador, or an afghan
but never a bloodhound or a newfoundland

I guess I would be a small red dachshund
for I too am compact, built close to the ground
