Golden Talisman

Midweek Wordle # 6
Midweek Wordle # 6

it was left to me – cleaning

out drawers and closets
after he was gone

my dad, who never
threw anything away
I stumbled over a river

of books that trickled
across the bedroom floor
the old chenille bedspread

was still turned down, ready
for the body that matched
the indentations of the mattress

the closet door stuck – it always
had – and I tugged, hard
until it yawned open

there looking out at me was
the assemblage of an
everyday wardrobe

I pulled the faded, pilled blue
sweater that he wore all winter
from the wooden hanger

shrugged it over my shoulders
the lingering trace of aftershave
caressed me like a gentle hug

my fingers touched something
solid, round, smooth at the bottom
of a deep pocket – a ring

in my hand was my mother’s
simple gold wedding band kept
as a talisman of love for thirty years

tears brimmed, then released
like twin waterfalls cascading
down my cheeks

Renewal

image

Let’s dump it all –

the flotsam and jetsam

of many decades starting

with pithy retorts made

with no thought given

to their effects

Let’s load that caitiff

who lurks in the background

into a pick-up truck and

haul him away

You wince at the rictus  of

my discontent that bristles

and jags like an

unshaven face

We have accumulated

problem as if we are hoarders

I sway under the weight

of them the way a sapling

does on a windy day

bending, not breaking

Let’s scuttle this worn out

life and start fresh

Ahhh Today

some might say today
was a wasted day
no chores completed
no errands run
no phone calls returned
but listening to the cat
purr while I brush
her coat is
enough for me

Blue Ribbon Bovine

not a hair out of place

soft, silky, luxurious

a rich chestnut brown

special “shower” stalls

special shampoo

pedicures and facials

pampered and prodded

cows

at a spa?  at a fair

for a piece of shiny ribbon –

preferably blue

and the everyday folk

who come to ogle,

clothed in their best plaid

shirts and pressed denim jeans,

gnawing on turkey legs,

look raggedy

in comparison

Longing

Bathers by George Tooker
Bathers
by George Tooker

I long to let my hair flow

free, caught by the breeze

cascading like a waterfall –

To feel the sun kiss my shoulders

while your lips kiss mine –

To dip my toes in the

consecrated water of the

constant ocean –

To kneel in reverence on

the sandy alter of its beach –

To leave this monochrome life

behind and shine like

shards of sea glass

But I am bound to my sisters

by time and tradition

I will not leave

Time is suspended

Captured in a crystal ball

We hold our collective breaths –

Waiting

Anticipating

Hoping

The world counts the final seconds

Old is past

Unknown awaits our presence

Crowds cheering

Kissing

Hugging

Singing

Goodbye – Hello

Night People

Beats Beatrix by Dante Gabriel Rossetti
Beata Beatrix
by Dante Gabriel Rossetti

Everything has a beginning

formed from misty nowhere

gathering silence into speech

Runic people who found their

place beyond the known world

and dispatch counsel of hope

and peace – without words,

without talk – in the

middle of the night

And in the first light of

morning they retreat again

lingering only in my head,

my heart

Is It Raining

badge by: Doobster@Mindful Digressions
badge by: Doobster@Mindful Digressions

is it ever going to stop?

dai after day gray

clouds empty their cargo –

drip, drop, drip

showers, downpours, storms

tomato plants treading water

squash squished

ballfields flooded fit only

for a family of paddeling ducks

flop, flop of windshield wipers

accompanies the swish of tires

on wet pavement

an opus to sooth me to sleep

wide awake

in my dreams

predicted by arthritis
