Old Dreams

he wanted to be an artist

a young man, a dreamer

living in Paris or Florence

creating masterpieces then

not to sell but to present –

to give his paramour

the essence of his very soul

a gift rare and precious –

his life did not allow whimsy

an old man, he painted her walls instead

the essence of his very soul

  1. Sweetness & romantic nostalgia emanate from this fine palindrome. I like the central breaking line used as a refrain or chorus. It is a sad & prevalent fact that what we want too often is never achieved; at least, he /painted her walls/, putting fan imaginary love frame around each one; sigh.

  2. Sounds like humble beginnings. ..a good place to start …I would love to live in Paris..be an artist…sweet on painting the walls for her. There is magic in that. Nice storytelling through the form.

      1. Yep. And maybe you will make it back to read others today.
Or at least those that took the time to read/comment on you.

  3. Great poem! But I like to think even as he painted walls, he still saw visions and was an artist regardless. I always try to be optimistic. Too sad to think otherwise in this so fine poem.

  4. an artist is an artist whether he makes a masterpiece or paints a wall and how sad not everyone’s life is a dream come true…hope with love it was…a poignant story line in a beautifully done palindrome…

  6. Candy, this is so very touching. At first I thought you were writing of Van Gogh–it really mirrors his story–but then I ran into the wall(s)! I just came from a wonderful afternoon at the museum that included an art class, so the timing was perfect for me.
