Tethered

I wish for wings to take me

sailing over these rooftops

Wings that flap like the shirts and

sheets on this line, struggling for release

Yet, like the sheets, I am tethered to

this place – not with ropes and pegs,

but with invisible threads that

bind my heart to yours

My patched shorts
And the beautiful lacy
Slips my mother wore

I should make a grocery list
And pack lunches
It can’t be bedtime
I just made a cup of tea
And I’m going to read
Just one more chapter –
