Set Me Free

There is nothing free about this verse.

It has me tethered to my pen with the timer set for enough minutes to make a cup of tea. Instead here I sit, not free but tethered.

I could be watching something mindless on tv but instead I am bound by ink to this page, not free.

These minutes could have been used for online shopping – it is almost Christmas, you know. But I am tethered to a notebook, not free at all.

A prisoner to words pouring onto this page once blank. The timer ticks out a rhythm and my pen follows, dragging me along, dragging my feet, my mind and on the other end of time my muse sits grinning. She has her feet up, doing her nails – oh, yes, I could have done my nails in these minutes!

This verse is not free. It has me tethered by sentences until – ding!

  1. Ha! You and I both had similar thoughts! I called my poem Imprisoned Free Verse. And you are right, there is nothing free about this verse. Free Form maybe. Good write, especially as great minds have similar thoughts. 🙂

  3. Well, everything of value takes a modicum of commitment & effort, but free verse is without parameters. one can choose any form. or several, use nonsense words or epithets–so perhaps the only tether is self-imposed, as we feel obligated to participate. I was having too much fun to notice the shackles.

  4. So interesting. I sat with journal, as I do each morning, and just wrote and wrote….”stuff” about my life then and now. Maybe sitting in the dark, with only the small white lights on our memory tree (Christmas tree) and candles flickering…this time of year when I look at pictures on the shelfs of people who only exist now in pictures….and transport backwards to snippets….ah, there I go again! So then, with red pen in hand….circled stuff that stood out and culled a poem out of that. Funny, I find the free writing liberating. But again, maybe its the twinkling lights? 🙂

Do love this though….especially the last word 🙂 Smiling I am.
